Create the project
- Click New → Project from the sidebar.
- Give it a name a stranger would understand in six months.
- Choose the default view — Board for flow, List for checklists, Timeline for anything with dates.
- Set visibility: workspace-wide, or restricted to the people you add.
Set up your statuses
Statuses are the columns on a board and the groups on a list. The default set is To do, In progress and Done. Add a status when it changes who is responsible for the work — "In review" earns its place because the reviewer picks it up; "Nearly done" does not, because nobody new is involved.
Add only the fields you will read
Every custom field is a question someone has to answer on every task. Add Priority and Due date on day one. Add Estimate when you start planning capacity. Add anything else only when you have a report you cannot build without it.
Leave these for later
- Automations — write them once you know which manual step you keep repeating.
- Custom dashboards — three weeks of data makes a much better dashboard than none.
- Sub-projects — split only when the single project genuinely stops fitting on one screen.
