Run a sprint

Start to finish: planning, the board, mid-sprint scope change, and closing out.

5 min read

Plan

  1. Open the project → Sprints → New sprint, and set the dates.
  2. Drag work from the backlog into the sprint. The capacity bar fills as you go.
  3. Stop when the bar reaches your team's recent average velocity, not when it reaches 100%.
  4. Click Start sprint.

During

The sprint board shows only sprint work. Anything added after the start is flagged as scope change and appears as a step up on the burndown, which is what makes the conversation at the retro possible.

Close

Completing a sprint asks what to do with unfinished work: move it to the next sprint, or return it to the backlog. Returning it is usually right — work that has survived two sprints untouched is telling you something.

The sprint report is generated at close and frozen. Later edits to tasks never change what the report said happened.
